Our Elementary classes span Kindergarten through 5th grade. During these years, students learn to excel in solving problems, engaging in ideas, and creating solutions.
St. John’s provides a secure, nurturing environment that elementary-age children need to explore and experiment. Our Christian-based programs strive to instill a life-long love of learning and a quest for knowledge among students from kindergarten onward. Our students become active thinkers, makers, and explorers of ideas.
Our students begin their day with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Pledge to the Christian flag, and the Lord’s Prayer. In addition to Wednesday chapel, we also have Thursday meetings with our Pastor. Students also have access to our library and music classes.
Early elementary classes prioritize establishing a strong foundation in reading and mathematics. Students are provided with hands-on activities and projects in areas such as, mathematics, phonemic awareness, social studies, and science. Their learning environment is not limited to the classroom and outdoor instruction is also prioritized. Our goal is to help our students develop problem solving skills and form their own solutions led by their faith.
Upper Elementary classes build confidence in student's academic abilities, which allows for the desire to discover more about the world. We focus on gaining competence and mastery of skills gained in previous years. They continue to learn and understand the concept of organization and time management, which come with the additional responsibilities gained with age. Using hands-on activities, games, projects, and field trips, our students are exposed to a variety of learning experiences. Here they will develop academic talents and skills to the fullest extent of his or her ability.
Our teachers provide a multitude of opportunities for which students can learn and grow. As they complete their elementary school years, students will have begun to see themselves as capable individuals who will use their gifts and talents for the good of others, armed with the key skills to excel in Middle School.
Our reading program is designed to provide students with many opportunities to explore reading, writing, speaking and listening. The curriculum expands the student's reading ability by emphasizing comprehension and reading for information and enjoyment. By emphasizing the writing process, students gain firsthand applications for grammar, spelling, and writing skills.
We emphasize the mastery of the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. With their understanding of all four methods of computation for whole numbers, students now apply the skills to other number systems, particularly fractions. Measurements of length, time, weight, capacity, and temperature are explored.
The science program is divided into three components: life science, physical science, and earth science. Students will be engaged in their learning through reading, inquiry, and digital means.
We learn the love of Jesus, the One who forgives all their sins, the great love of God for sending His only Son to die for them, and the power the Holy Spirit gives to them daily. Together with a study of the Ten Commandments, the One in Christ lessons are based upon Bible stories, which span Biblical History from Creation to Pentecost. Memory work is assigned weekly.
The music program is a graduated system based on Oklahoma State Standards. Students will learn about music through responding, connecting, performing and creating. Students from 2nd-5th grade will play in our student guitar ensemble where they will learn to read music in treble clef.
Students investigate the different geographical regions of the United States, learning that God’s creation is a blessing and all that God has created must be treated with responsibly. As the students investigate cultures and people, they learn how each of these interact and affect each other.
